Wake Family Psychology Staff
David Smoot, PhD, grew up in central Ohio and earned his doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Penn State University in 1988. At Penn State, his research focused on the connections among kids' aggressive behavior and their family and peer relationships. He has had ample opportunities to draw upon and apply his findings from that research in his current practice. Dr. Smoot has been in private practice in Raleigh since 1988 and has been active in the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA). He has served NCPA in many capacities, including as President of NCPA from 1996-97. In 2005, he received the Mary Clark award from his NCPA colleagues for his leadership and advocacy on behalf of psychology. His approach to therapy with children, families, and couples reflects his philosophy that therapy is most successful when it focuses on coaching individuals to earnestly evaluate their circumstances, consider the consequences of their choices, and to choose and pursue their goals with commitment and dedication, along with a dose of humor. Dr. Smoot is active in his church and has chaired its Administrative Board and Mission Committee, and participated in missions both locally and globally. He has also participated in organizations promoting racial equity and antiracism. Dr. Smoot has also been the Board Chair of the Raleigh/Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness. He has two young adult children and his wife, Beth, who is co-founder of The Green Chair Project .
